Unlike a regular real estate investment trust (REIT) that own real estate properties such as shopping centers or medical office buildings, mortgage REITs own no physical property. The management liability exposures are much greater for mortgage companies and non equity mortgage REITs.  The exposure then varies depending if its non-agency or agency for reasons anyone involved in the industry would know.
